Palo Alto, is located 35 miles south of San Francisco and 14 miles north of San Jose, Palo Alto is a community of approximately 63000 residents. Located in the northwest corner of Santa Clara County, in the San Francisco Bay Area, the city is named after a tree called El Palo Alto. The city includes portions of Stanford University and a number of Silicon Valley high-technology companies are headquartered in Palo Alto, including Hewlett-Packard, VMware, Facebook, and Palantir Technologies.
The earliest history of Palo Alto is from 1769, when Gaspar de Portol noted an Ohlone Indian settlement. Located in Palo Alto are remains an area of known Indian mounds. The city got its name from a stand redwood trees, El Palo Alto, by the banks of the San Francisquito Creek bordering Menlo Park. One of these trees can still be found along the foot bridge on Alma Street. Many of the Spanish names in the Palo Alto area represent the local heritage of the community. Thechnology also finds its roots in the City of Palo Alto, while not open to the public, the garage that housed the launch of Hewlett Packard is located at 367 Addison Avenue. Hewlett Packard recently restored the house and garage.
Located on the San Francisco Bay, Palo Alto has cool, wet winters and warm, dry summers. In January, average temperatures range from 38.5 F to 57.4 F. While in July, the average temperatures range from 54.9 F to 78.4 F. Palo Alto serves as a central economic focal point of the Silicon Valley, and is home to more than 7,000 businesses which employ more than 98,000 people.
